CHOOSING DIGIT SIZE AND NUMBER OF DIGITS
How big are the digits?
Chronomix Displays use digits of different sizes. The mechanical digits are 11/2 inches, 4 inches, 6 inches and 9 inches tall. The yellow color on a black background is highly visible in daylight or under lights at night. Red LED digits are used in two sizes, 2.3 inches and 4 inches tall. The red LED digits are very good indoors and in areas with less lighting. They are not intended for outdoor use. They cannot be seen in direct sunlight.
All digits used by Chronomix are full figure, seven segment, easily readable numbers. Points of light and dot matrix figures are not used.
The digit size determines the distance from which they can be easily read. A rule of thumb of 40 feet to the inch is a good estimate. A 2 inch digit can be read from 80 feet, a 4 inch digit can be read from 160 feet, a 6 inch from 240 feet and a 9 inch from 360 feet. The picture gives an idea of relative size.
