SELECT TIMING
An optional Select Timing Keypad may be connected to the CC737 Printer so that a competitor number can be printed alongside the finish time on the printout. It's main purpose has been to perform the matching of times with competitors. Select Timing can also be used as a powerful tool for marking each competitor's time with a class, a group start, or other information which will assist the computer to select and sort the timing information in the preparation of results. The Select Keypad cannot be used with Chronomix Displays.
Select Timing Keypad Operation
The Select Timing Keypad is a microprocessor controlled unit that communicates with the CC737 via the cable connected to the keypad. To use the full capability of the keypad, you will need to be able to change the select timing mode and lane, as well as know how to connect the keypad to the CC737 and to enter select numbers. You will find the instructions for these actions in the following sections.
Connecting the Select Timing Keypad to the CC737
The Select Timing Keypad has a 30 foot cable which connects to the SELECT jack on the CC737. The connection must not be made while the CC737 is timing because it will corrupt the memory in the CC737 and destroy the results of the current event!
Select Number Entry
The select numbers entered into the Select Timing Keypad may consist of any combination or up to six numbers and/or the letters 'A' through 'F'. As each character is entered, it will appear on the right side of the display, and any previously entered characters will shift to the left. When the display shows six characters, entering another character will shift the leftmost character off of the display, deleting that character.
Once the desired select number has been entered into the keypad and is showing on the display, you may then send the number to the CC737 by pressing the Enter key. The response of the CC737 to the Enter key depends upon the select timing mode you are using. When the Enter key is pressed, the select number is cleared off of the display, allowing entry of a new select number.
Select Timing Keypad Mode Description
The Select Timing Keypad provides five modes or different methods of timing. The five select timing modes are described in the following sections.
Select Timing Mode 1 (Time and Select Number Only)
Select timing mode 1 will print a time and a select number, but no place or channel. The place counts in the CC737 will be unaffected by select inputs. Each time the Enter key is pressed, the time at which the Enter key was pressed and the select number will be printed in red on the printout.
This mode is used primarily when select timing is used to ensure place order, and only a fraction of the participants are being select timed. The normal method of operation is to time every participant with grip switches and select time only a small percentage of the finishers. The select number for a competitor about to finish is entered into the keypad, then the Enter key is pressed as the participant crosses the finish line just as if the Enter key were being used to time the finisher. This would give the finisher two times: the normal placed time from the grip switch in black, and an unplaced time in red with the select number. Depending on whether the Enter key was pressed before or after the grip switch was pressed, the select time will be printed just before or just after the finish time recorded by the grip switch. You would then match up these times to know they are for the same competitor.
This method of select timing should only be used when you can select time relatively isolated finishers, since you have to associate two times from different sources. If the finishes are too close together, you may not be able to tell if the select time recorded belonged to the finish time printed before or after it on the printout.
Select Timing Mode 2 (Arm Specific Lane with Select Number)
Mode 2 allows a select number to be assigned to the next finish recorded in a specific channel. When the next finish is recorded in the selected channel, CC737 will match the select number to the time and print all of the usual information as well as the select number on one line. The line is printed in red to signify that a select number has been printed. If you should enter more than one select number before a finish is received in the selected lane, only the last number entered will be printed.
When this select timing mode is chosen, the keypad will prompt you for a lane (channel). Enter the channel number using the number keys and press the Lane key. You may change the lane again at any time by pressing the Lane key, entering the new lane number, then pressing the Lane key again.
When you enter a select number and press the Enter key, the Select Timing Keypad informs the CC737 that the select number just entered into the keypad will belong to the next time recorded in the selected channel. Note that the CC737 will not print upon the press of the Enter key! Once a finish is recorded in the proper channel, however, then the normal channel, place and time information will be printed along with the select number. Only one channel may be "armed" at a time.
This select timing mode is useful when you are select timing in multiple lanes or most of the participants in a single lane. You must be careful to enter the select number before the participant finishes in the desired lane. This will require at least a small amount of time between the finishers, which may preclude the use of this mode at high peak finish rates. This method of select timing does avoid the need to match times, since the CC737 will perform this task for you.
Select Timing Mode 3 (Arm Next Finish with Select Number)
This mode is identical to select timing mode 2 with the following exception: the select number entered will be matched with the next finish regardless of channel. If you are only using one channel of timing, yet want the matching capability of select mode 2, or you don't really want more than one channel selected, use this mode.
Select Timing Mode 4 (Stand-Alone Select Timing)
This mode has been provided to allow the entry of finish times into the CC737 directly from the select timing keypad. When a select number is entered into the Select Timing Keypad and the Enter key is pressed, the CC737 will record a finish time with select number in the lane selected and print the channel, place within channel, overall place, time and select number. The CC737 treats the select number as if it were a normal finish recorded in the selected channel, and will increment the place within channel and overall place normally. A finish time is recorded when the Enter key is pressed. You must specify a channel for the finish to be recorded in when this mode is entered.
The most likely use of this mode is for small races where only one operator is present. All timing can be accomplished by use of the keypad only. Since it is not necessary to actually enter the select number into the keypad, you can use the Enter key as a grip switch, pressing it at the finish of each participant, and enter select numbers as time permits.
Select Timing Mode 5 (Select Number Only)
This select timing mode causes the CC737 to print the select number only. No place or time information is printed with the select number.
This mode can be used to print lists of bib/car numbers or to print a select number to be associated with a time as in mode 1. None of the select numbers entered using this mode will have any affect on the timing.
