STEP PADS

Rubber switch mats (step pads) can be used to trigger Chronomix timers. There are two basic types of timing with switch mats.

Normally Open Switch, (actuated when pressed).
A Step Pad which is normally open will close the switch when pressure is applied by the runner. The switch will activate the timer in exactly the same manner as a timing cord. With the timer in the default mode one Step Pad can be used to start the timing and a second Step Pad can be used to take splits.

Note that the runner must run across the mat in order to start the timer. If the runner wants to start with his weight on the mat a normally closed switch is required (see below).

Normally closed switch, (actuated when pressure is removed).
Certain applications require a Step Pad that is a normally closed switch. In other words the switch will be open when pressure is applied and closed when pressure is released. This allows the runner to start the timing by stepping off the Step Pad . A runner who is going to start with his weight on the Step Pad wants the time to start when his weight is removed. A football quarterback also wants the timing to start after he begins to move, i.e. after he removes his foot from the Step Pad.

Chronomix supplies a reversing accessory which makes the Step Pad act like a normally closed switch rather than a normally open switch.

Uses for Step Pads
For a club run you can use either a Printing Timer or a Display and Printer, actuated with a Step Pad, to record everyones' finish time automatically. If everyone steps on the Step Pad as they finish and then signs a numbered finish list you will have a list of times from the timer (each identified with a place number) and a finish list (with each name identified with a place number). So, your chief timer can run the race along with everyone else! Of course you may want to chain your clock to a tree while everyone is out running.

For individual practice you can run the Display in automatic with a Step Pad, so that it starts, stops, shows the time and resets itself automatically.

There are many ways to combine the use of Step Pads with Chronomix Displays and Timers. In every case the Step Pad relieves the necessity of having a person stand there with a timing cord taking times. It is ideal for fun runs and practice sessions. Also different step pad sizes can be provided if required. A mat that is large enough so a runner does not have to break stride may be 4, 5 or 6 feet long. For base running you may want a Step Pad the same size as a base on a baseball diamond.
